The bill would allow for patient prescription data sharing between states and increased interoperability among EHRs. Additionally, the bill would add information such as the number of refills a patient is prescribed to EHRs as well as clarify patient identification to assist with matching by pharmacists and prescribers.

Federal funding for the PDMP is set to end Aug. 31. The bill allows for a new grant beginning Sept. 1, which is expected to cover its costs. New costs are mostly the result of software and computer program modifications, according to the report.
