Medical Malpractice Claims Hit an All-Time Low in Ohio

The Ohio Department of Insurance's annual Ohio Medical Professional Liability Closed Claim Report reveals there were fewer medical malpractice claims recorded in Ohio in 2012 than in any other year since the state began tracking the number of claims, according to a Columbus Dispatch report.

The claims report found there were 2,733 medical malpractice claims filed in Ohio in 2012. This was the lowest number of claims filed within a single year since 2005, when the state began recording the number of medical malpractice claims filed, according to the Dispatch.

The claims report also revealed the majority of the claims filed in 2012 resulted in no malpractice payment. The claims that did pay out paid an average of $307,852 apiece, according to the Dispatch.
