Medical biller accused of stealing $1M from surgery practice

A medical biller is accused of stealing more than $1 million that was intended to be paid directly to physicians who provided medical care to injured workers under the New York State Workers’ Compensation Law.

Amrish Patel, 61, of Monroe Township, N.J., and his two companies — together known as Medlink — handled billing services for a New York City-based orthopedic surgery practice and was responsible for submitting billing for surgeries related to work-related injuries under the state's workers' compensation law, according to a Jan. 3 news release from the New York attorney general's office.

Mr. Patel allegedly submitted falsified claim forms to the New York State Insurance Fund and requested that the payments be sent directly to his companies instead of physicians, according to the release. He is accused of stealing at least $1.1 million in payments intended for three physicians for services provided between 2012 and 2019.

He is facing 27 charges stemming from the alleged scheme, the release said.
