A former cardiologist from Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md., is on trial over allegations that he unnecessarily implanted hundreds of stents into patients’ healthy arteries, according to a Daily Times report.
John R. McLean, MD, faces a seven-count indictment. PRMC accused him of implanting unnecessary heart stent procedures in 2007. Dr. McLean was indicted in 2010.
The indictment seeks forfeiture of nearly $520,000 — the amount of the total claims that Dr. McLean is said to have submitted to healthcare benefit programs for the allegedly unnecessary procedures. It also seeks two of his properties on the basis that Dr. McLean used earnings gained from allegedly unnecessary procedures to purchase the homes.
Dr. McLean faces decades in prison if found guilty. His trial is expected to last a month.
