The incident occurred just before 3 a.m. Tuesday on the sixth floor of the hospital, which is part of San Francisco-based Dignity Health.
Investigators say the alleged assailant and the patient knew each other, but their exact relationship and the motive behind the attack were unknown, according to the report.
The woman was reported to be in stable condition and physicians expect her to survive her injuries, according to the report.
The identities of those involved were not released by the police.
