Bankrupt California hospital to settle patient dumping suit with $450k

Hawaiian Gardens, Calif.-based Gardens Regional Hospital and Medical Center agreed to pay $450,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by the city of Los Angeles, which claims the hospital dumped a homeless woman with schizophrenia on Skid Row, an impoverished area in downtown Los Angeles, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The city of Los Angeles initially filed the lawsuit against the hospital in 2015.

According to the lawsuit, police found an unidentified 38-year-old woman at a downtown shelter without a cellphone, ID, money or medication in 2014. The woman was reportedly dressed in a paper hospital gown. The lawsuit alleges the hospital improperly discharged the woman at least five times.

The hospital filed for bankruptcy in June and will reportedly pay the fine once a court approves the hospital’s sale, according to the article.
