Hospital spokesman Jerry Berger said the hospital is closing the 24-bed floor called “5 Stoneman” due to a slight decline in patient volume, according to a Boston Herald report. Veronica Turner of 1199 SEIU, a union representing some hospital employees, said in the report that this closure, in addition to recent layoffs of more than 20 employees and an ongoing government review of the hospital’s admissions rates, raise questions about the organization’s future.
Hospital CEO Kevin Tabb, MD, wrote in a March 6 memo to staff that healthcare reform and other changes in the industry have shifted some volume from academic medical centers to primary care offices and community hospitals, according to the report.
