Lenox Hill urology chief under investigation for concurrent surgeries, billing practices

David Samadi, MD, the chairman of urology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City and Fox News contributor, is under investigation by the New York Office of Professional Medical Conduct and by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan, according to a report from The Boston Globe.

The state investigation surrounds potentially problematic concurrent surgery practices, detailed in a report by The Boston Globe's Spotlight team, while the federal prosecutors are looking into Dr. Samadi's billing practices, according to the report. Medicare requires surgeons at teaching hospitals to be present for the critical portions of all surgeries when billing for concurrent procedures.

A spokeswoman from Great Neck, N.Y.-based Northwell Health, the health system that operates Lenox Hill, told The Boston Globe in March it plans to cooperate with the state investigation and that Dr. Samadi has excellent surgical outcomes and remains in compliance with Medicare rules.
