Eduardo Abellana, MD, 75, of Las Vegas, referred medically unnecessary prescriptions to a Detroit-based pharmacy for patients he had not treated in exchange for cash kickbacks paid by the pharmacy owners, according to a May 23 Justice Department news release.
He was convicted on charges of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and conspiracy to defraud the United States and receive kickbacks, according to the release. He faces up to 15 years in prison.
