The case was filed against the hospital after their daughter suffered permanent brain damage at birth.
An attorney for the family argued that fetal monitor strips from the hospital showed their daughter was in distress and needed an “immediate caesarean section” due to excessive uterine activity caused by medication given to her mother, according to the report.
According to court documents, medical staff did not stop the flow of medication and delivery did not occur in time, resulting in brain damage due to a lack of oxygen for the child. She has been diagnosed with spastic quadriplegia, cerebral palsy and a seizure disorder.
“MyMichigan Health sympathizes with the family and the challenges they have faced and will face. While we sympathize with the family, we disagree with the verdict and stand behind the care delivered by our health care team,” the hospital said in a statement shared with Becker’s.
