Illinois hospital pays $12.5M to settle whistleblower suit for alleged billing errors

Springfield, Ill.-based St. Elizabeth's Hospital has agreed to pay $12.5 million to settle allegations in a whistleblower suit that it committed billing errors resulting in an overpayment for services, according to the Justice Department.

Prosecutors alleged that the hospital, part of Hospital Sisters Health System, submitted claims for urgent care services billed at a higher level of service.

The Justice Department said St. Elizabeth fully cooperated with the investigation when the alleged errors were brought to its attention.

The settlement is not an admission of any wrongdoing by St. Elizabeth.
