ICD-9 already includes codes for a physically abused person, battered person, spouse or woman; adult emotional/psychological abuse; adult sexual abuse; adult nutritional neglect; and other adult abuse and neglect, according to the report. However, the ICD-10 coding system will allow providers to use additional codes if applicable for injuries associated with abuse and an external cause code to identify the abuser.
The ICD-10 codes will also allow providers to specify the type of encounter (first or subsequent) and whether the abuse is suspected or confirmed.
