Iowa City-based University of Iowa Health Care agreed to two separate settlements tied to alleged negligence, according to an Aug. 12 report from The Gazette.
In the first case, the health system will pay $500,000 to a former patient after radiologists misread a 2021 hip X-ray. The patient, who was in a car accident, was told there was no fracture and was discharged without restrictions. She later moved to India, where a CT scan revealed the fracture UIHC had missed. She now has permanent osteoarthritis and reduced mobility, and her income has dropped from $625 a week to about $8,000 a year.
In the second case, UIHC will pay $300,000 to the estate of Emmalou Welch, who fell during an inpatient stay in August 2022 and suffered bilateral femur fractures requiring surgery. She died in October 2022. Welch’s estate alleged the fall and her death resulted from UIHC negligence.
