House Committee Holds Hearing to Review New MedPAC Report

Members of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee met on Tuesday to review the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission’s annual report to Congress, which recommends a number of changes to Medicare and its fee-for-service design in an effort to save federal money and improve care for beneficiaries.

“Given the current fiscal issues facing the Medicare program, it is critical that the Committee ensures that taxpayer and beneficiary dollars are being spent appropriately,” Chairman of the Ways and Means Subcommittee Rep. Wally Herger (R-Calif.) said in a statement. “MedPAC’s thoughts on reforming Medicare’s benefit design are important as the committee considers much needed and long-overdue structural improvements to the program.”

MedPAC Chairman Glen M. Hackbarth was a witness at the Congressional hearing; members of the subcommittee asked him questions about the annual report following his prepared statements, including questions about MedPACs suggestion to move away from fee-for-service payments and add an additional charge on supplemental insurance.

MedPAC advises Congress on Medicare payment policy and was required by law to submit its annual report on Medicare payment policies to Congress on June 15.
