HCA’s Mission Hospital sues to intervene in rival’s expansion

Mission Hospital in Asheville, N.C., filed a lawsuit Jan. 10 to stop Hendersonville, N.C.-based Pardee Hospital from expanding its cardiac catheterization services, according to a Jan. 24 report in the Asheville Citizen Times.

Mission Hospital has an in-hospital cardiac catheterization unit serving patients in the same region.

Pardee, which is owned by Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Health, received approval to add an in-house cardiac catheterization unit in 2019 to replace its mobile unit. Last year, the hospital requested to keep the mobile cardiac catheterization lab due to “market shifts” and high utilization.

The state denied Pardee’s request, which the hospital contested. Mission, which is owned by Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare, argued Pardee’s actions should require a certificate of need. A judge barred Mission from intervening in Pardee’s challenge in December, and Mission filed the most recent lawsuit to stay involved as an “affected person.”
