Undercover agents got subsidized insurance using fake IDs

Undercover investigators using fake identities were able to secure subsidized health plans by enrolling through call centers that handle applications for consumers who are unable to use HealthCare.gov.

During its investigation, the Government Accountability Office had a 61 percent success rate at securing subsidized insurance using fake identifications. In addition, the investigators were also able to get parts of fake documentation submitted for two applications verified.

The GAO's findings support concerns many lawmakers have about the process for obtaining subsidized insurance on the exchanges. However, subsidized insurance plans will likely not be a target for many fraudsters, as insurance companies receive government subsidy payments directly, according to an Associated Press report.

The GAO is presenting all of the findings from its undercover investigation to the House Ways and Means Committee this week.
