The former CEO of Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton, Iowa, has been sentenced to 41 months in prison for defrauding his former California employer out of more than $3.2 million, according to a March 11 news release from the Justice Department.
Euan MacGregor, 54, of Iowa City, Iowa, pleaded guilty in August to one count of wire fraud for embezzling more than $3.2 million from his former employer. He was also sentenced to 36 months of supervised release and ordered to pay $3,217,456.41 in restitution.
Between November 2014 and January 2020, while serving as chief administrative officer of a company that provided medical laboratory directorship and pathology services to hospitals and clinics, Mr. MacGregor diverted at least 122 checks payable to the employer into bank accounts he controlled, according to court documents.
Virginia Gay Hospital confirmed in a previous statement that Mr. MacGregor is no longer employed by the hospital. CFO Barry Dietsch and Chief Nursing Officer Tina Eden, RN, were appointed as interim executive leaders until a new CEO is hired, the hospital said in August.
“Virginia Gay Hospital cannot comment further on this confidential personnel matter,” the statement said. “We remain committed to providing quality health care services to the patients and communities that we serve.”
