Former Chilton Medical Center employee charged in computer theft incident

A former IT employee at Chilton Medical Center in Pequannock, N.J., has been charged with computer criminal theft for an incident that dates back to January 2015.

Sergiu Jitcu, 39, allegedly stole various items, including computer equipment, from Chilton Medical Center to later sell on eBay while working at the hospital. The criminal activity took place between Jan. 1, 2015, and Nov. 8, 2017.

Chilton Medical Center learned of the employee wrongdoing after a Wisconsin resident notified hospital officials that he had purchased a computer hard drive on eBay from Mr. Jitcu. The hard drive contained personally identifying information of several patients treated at Chilton Medical Center.

Mr. Jitcu pleaded guilty on Sept. 4 to one count of computer criminal activity and one count of theft. He has been sentenced to a non-custodial probation for five years, with the special condition that he pay the hospital a fine of $64,250.
