Florida probes hospital pricing, patient billing practices: 4 notes

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said he has opened an investigation into price transparency and billing practices of hospitals in the state, according to a video his office posted on X.

Here’s what to know:

1. The probe is in support of President Donald Trump’s executive order concerning hospital billing, as part of his “Make America Healthy Again” agenda. The order directs federal agencies to ensure hospitals and insurers disclose “actual prices, not estimates.”

2. Last week, Mr. Uthmeier sent subpoenas to “multiple” health systems to look into patient charges, disclosures, billing practices, price transparency and surprise billing protections.

3. Two of those systems include Southern Baptist of Florida and AdventHealth, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

4. To date, two Florida hospitals have been fined for alleged price transparency violations, Miami-based Jackson Memorial Hospital and Jacksonville-based UF Health North.
