In June, Excela and its Westmoreland Regional Hospital in Greenburg settled allegations that they submitted false claims for Medicare reimbursement for medically unnecessary cardiac stenting procedures.
Those allegedly improper procedures took place from January 2009 through December 2011 and were performed by two interventional cardiologists who had privileges at Westmoreland.
An Excela spokesperson said the Department of Justice prohibited the system from releasing the terms of the settlement until the government made it public, according to a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review report.
