Excela Health Hasn't Discussed Settlements for 115 Overstenting Lawsuits, Lawyers Say

Lawyers for patients have said there have been no talks to settle 115 lawsuits filed against Greensburg, Pa.-based Excela Health over allegedly unnecessary heart procedures that occurred at one of the system's hospitals, according to a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review report.

In March 2011, Excela sent letters to 141 former stent patients, notifying them that an investigation found they may have received medically unnecessary procedures in 2010. Another 51 patients received similar letters in June 2011 about stent procedures that were performed in 2009.

Two lawyers who represent more than 50 patients who field suit say neither Excela's Westmoreland Hospital in Greensburg nor two physicians allegedly involved in the overstenting have discussed settlements. "They seem to have a monolithic wall up," Mike Rosenzweig, JD, said in the report. The physicians facing lawsuits are Ehab Morcos, MD, and George Bou Samra, MD.

Excela's attorney declined comment about potential settlement talks, according to the report.

Attorneys are expected to return to court May 3 for a hearing.
