CMS Makes Preliminary Decision to Ease Supervision for 27 Outpatient Delivery Services

CMS recently announced a decision to accept all but one recommendation from the Hospital Outpatient Payment Panel, meaning that supervision for 27 outpatient delivery services will move from direct to general, meaning a physician’s physical presence is not required during performance of an outpatient procedure so long as he or she provides the direction of the care.

Most of the services deal with psychotherapy; others deal with catheterization, immunization administration and tobacco and smoking counseling services. CMS does not propose to accept the panel’s suggestion to move to general supervision inhalation treatment for acute airway obstruction.

CMS will field comments on its preliminary decision emailed to HOPSupervisionComments@cms.hhs.gov through May 19. The agency expects to make a final ruling on the proposed changes to outpatient service supervision by July 1.
