Under the rule, CMS will verify the credentials of providers ordering or certifying equipment and supplies to ensure Medicare beneficiaries receive quality care.
All providers and suppliers who qualified for National Provider Identification are required to include their NPI on enrollment applications for Medicare and Medicaid, as well as all reimbursement claims. This is intended to give CMS and states the ability to link specific claims to the ordering or certifying physician to check for any suspicious ordering activity.
