CMS Backs Off Direct Supervision Requirement for Critical Access Hospitals

CMS will instruct Medicare contractors not to enforce supervision requirements for therapeutic services provided to outpatients in critical access hospitals, according to a report by the Healthcare Financial Management Association.

The decision, revealed in a CMS memo to Congressional health committee staff, will remain in effect through Dec. 31, 2010, and a new policy will be considered during rulemaking for 2011.

Some rural providers said the supervision requirements could be difficult to meet.
