Chicago physician convicted of billing fraud

A Chicago physician has been convicted of billing insurance companies for nonexistent chiropractic manipulations, according to the U.S Justice Department.

A jury found Paul Madison, MD, an anesthesiologist and pain management specialist, guilty of healthcare fraud, making false statements in connection with the delivery of healthcare services and aggravated identity theft.

Dr. Madison owned Watertower SurgiCenter, an outpatient surgical center in Chicago's upscale Gold Coast neighborhood.  From 2005 to 2009, he directed staff at the center to submit false bills to insurers for manipulation-under-anesthesia of body parts — treatment that never occurred, according to the Justice Department.

Dr. Madison and others falsified patient records to support the billing fraud, and the physician caused the fraudulent claims to be submitted to patients' insurance companies for reimbursement, the Justice Department said.

Dr. Madison is scheduled to be sentenced March 25.
