The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control recently approved Certificate of Needs for two hospitals in Berkley County, which is just north of Charleston, according to a report by the Charleston Regional Business Journal.

Roper St. Francis Healthcare and Trident Health System, which is part of HCA, both had filed for permission to build separate 50-bed hospitals in the county.

Roper was pleased with the announcement, but Trident plans to appeal the decision, citing that the county cannot support two separate facilities. Trident argued the hospitals would lose a combined $58 million during the first five years of operation if both facilities were approved, according to the report.
