AHA Supports IPAB Repeal

The American Hospital Association has expressed support for a repeal of the Independent Payment Advisory Board, a cost-control entity created by President Barack Obama’s healthcare reform law.

Earlier this month, Republican senators reintroduced a bill to repeal the IPAB, which is a panel of 15 healthcare experts tasked with making targeted cuts in Medicare payments if the program’s overall spending exceeds a certain amount. The structure is intended to halt Congress’ involvement in Medicare cuts, but President Obama has not yet nominated any experts to the panel.

“America’s hospitals support the repeal of IPAB because its existence permanently removes Congress from the process of making decisions regarding Medicare payment, and threatens the important dialogue between hospitals and their elected officials about how hospitals can continue to provide the highest quality care to their patients and communities,” AHA Executive Vice President Rick Pollack wrote in a letter to the bill’s sponsor, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas).
