New Hampshire has become the third state to legally change the “physician assistant” title to “physician associate,” following Oregon and Maine.
A bipartisan study committee in New Hampshire found the term “assistant” can create confusion about a PA’s role and responsibilities. A bill passed in mid-June says the title change does not affect any rights, privileges or payment policies for PAs.
Maine became the second state to adopt the “physician associate” title on June 2. Oregon made the change in April.
