Kentucky physician admits lab test fraud in $3M false claims case

Paducah, Ky., physician Patrick Finney, MD, is paying $561,800 to settle allegations of CMS fraud and False Claims Act violations, the Justice Department said June 21.

Dr. Finney admitted guilt as part of the settlement, the department said. He allegedly defrauded Medicare of more than $3 million from November 2017 through August 2020.

He worked with locum tenens physician staffing firm Barton Associates to provide telehealth services related to the referral of Medicare patients for durable medical equipment and genetic testing, the department said.

Dr. Finney allegedly received illegal payment from the firm and its clients in exchange for referring Medicare patients and ordering equipment and genetic testing that were not medically necessary, the department said.
