Livongo among 5 startups receiving access to de-identified data in BCBS innovation challenge

The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association announced the five finalists in its Data Innovation Challenge, in which digital health startups were tasked with developing claims data-based approaches to reducing costs and improving outcomes.

The finalists, chosen from a pool of more than 130 applicants, will receive access to a de-identified dataset of BCBS members' covered procedures from the Blue Health Intelligence database to further develop their solutions. After two months, the finalists will present their proposals to leaders from the BCBS Association and Blue Health Intelligence; the ultimate winner will receive further access to BCBS data, as well as support from BCBS leadership.

Here are the five finalists and how they plan to use the dataset, according to BCBS:

  • Livongo (Mountain View, Calif.): identify, predict and prioritize members at risk of medication non-adherence.
  • Pager (New York City): learn how care teams can enhance members' journeys through their healthcare usage.
  • Thrive Earlier Detection (Cambridge, Mass.): gain further insights into the health-economic impact of earlier cancer detection.
  • Wildflower Health (San Francisco):  improve their pregnancy platform's existing risk-stratification model, allowing for more appropriate and timely intervention for members.
  • Workit (Ann Arbor, Mich.): uncover more holistic and comprehensive ways to measure the success of addiction treatments to support the identification, prediction, and prioritization of members and providers for real-time interventions.
