12 innovations that will transform healthcare in the next decade

In the 2020s, innovation in medicine and healthcare will be defined by diversity, consumerization and even more intelligent artificial intelligence, all of which will help create solutions to the industry's biggest challenges.

A recent article from Time predicts the 12 technologies and trends that will shape healthcare in 2020 and the ensuing decade, along with the high-powered people leading the charge for each innovation. Though not exhaustive, the list is instead representative of the disruption that is in store for healthcare, the outlet noted.

Here are the dozen innovations that will change medicine and healthcare in the next 10 years, according to Time:

  • Drone-delivered medical supplies: David Abney, chairman and CEO of UPS
  • A searchable database of trillions of health data points: Christine Lemke, co-founder and president of Evidation
  • A stem cell cure for diabetes: Doug Melton, PhD, co-founder of Semma Therapeutics

  • A market-driven approach to clinical cancer research: Sean Parker, founder and chairman of Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy
  • Wearables controlled by neural activity: Thomas Reardon, PhD, CEO and co-founder of CTRL-Labs
  • Pocket-sized ultrasound devices: Jonathan Rothberg, PhD, founder and CEO of Butterfly Network
  • Cancer-diagnosing AI: Shravya Shetty, senior staff software engineer at Google
  • Algorithms to find overlooked discoveries in scientific papers: Joanna Shields, CEO of BenevolentAI
  • Walmart-ification of healthcare: Sean Slovenski, president of health and wellness at Walmart
  • 3D digital hearts: Charles Taylor, PhD, founder and CTO of HeartFlow
