5 notes on infectious disease physician compensation last year

Infectious disease physicians had an average income of $245,000 in 2020, down from $256,000 in 2019, according to Medscape's infectious diseases physician compensation report published May 14.

The report is based on survey responses from 17,903 practicing U.S. physicians collected between Oct. 6, 2020, and Feb. 11. One percent of respondents were infectious disease  physicians.

Four more report findings:

1. Thirty-two percent of infectious disease physicians reported some decline in compensation last year.

2. Of the physicians reporting a compensation drop, 83 percent cited pandemic-related issues, such as job loss or a reduction in hours, as the reason for the income drop.

3. Among infectious disease physicians whose income dropped because of pandemic-related factors, 55 percent said they anticipated their income would return to normal in the next two to three years.

4. Among all specialties, infectious disease physicians were most likely to say they did not feel fairly compensated. Just 44 percent of infectious disease physicians said they felt fairly compensated, down from 51 percent in 2019.
