Hawaii workers at Kaiser affiliate approve contract

Workers have ratified a contract agreement between Wailuku, Hawaii-based Maui Health System and the union that represents about 470 of them, according to The Maui News.

The agreement affects United Public Workers union members at Wailuku-based Maui Memorial Medical Center, Kula (Hawaii) Hospital and Lanai Community Hospital in Lanai City. All three hospitals are part of the Maui Health System, which became an affiliate of Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente in 2017.

Details of the deal between Maui Health System and UPW were not released, according to The Maui News.

Lisa Paulson, director of strategic communications for Maui Health System, told the newspaper UPW ratified its contract Oct. 19, affecting 473 regular full-time and part-time employees including maintenance, food service and laundry services workers.

A union staffer told The Maui News UPW State Director Dayton Nakanelua was not available for comment.

Michael Rembis, CEO and hospital administrator for Maui Health System, told The Maui News he was "very pleased" a labor deal was approved by union members.
