Unionization efforts began earlier this year, with help from the Vermont branch of the American Federation of Teachers. At issue for pro-union workers has been staffing, according to the report. They have argued forming a union would help resolve staffing problems, while the hospital argued unionization was not the answer and would negatively affect the relationship between nurses and hospital administrators.
VTDigger reported that the AFT branch has accused the hospital of “illegal campaigning” before the unionization vote, but Northwestern has denied the assertions.
