UVM Medical Center nurses begin 2-day strike

Unionized nurses at University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington began a strike July 12 after the most recent contract negotiations with management failed.

About 1,800 nurses represented by the Vermont Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals are set to strike from 7 a.m. until 7 a.m. July 14.

Both sides returned to the bargaining table several times this week, with the latest negotiations occurring July 11, but wages remain a key sticking point.

UVM Medical Center has proposed 13 percent raises over the three-year contract, with "significant [additional] increases" for nurses in certain roles, while the union has sought a 23 percent pay increase in the same time frame.

Isabelle Desjardins, MD, CMO at UVM medical center, previously said no changes were expected in emergency room and trauma services availability during a strike, but the hospital reportedly has postponed about 68 elective surgeries.

Additionally, the 447-bed tertiary care regional referral center confirmed it trained 600 temporary replacement nurses to fill in during the walkout.

No contract negotiations are scheduled. The nurses' last contract expired July 9.
