Nurses, Michigan Medicine reach tentative labor deal

Nurses have reached a tentative contract agreement with Ann Arbor-based Michigan Medicine.

The three-year deal covers more than 5,700 nurses represented by the Michigan Professional Nurses Council, an affiliate of the Michigan Nurses Association. Details of the tentative agreement were not released.

"Details of the tentative agreement will be discussed at membership meetings, and nurses will have the final say through a ratification vote," Katie Oppenheim, RN, chair of the Michigan Nurses Association, said in a prepared statement.

"Our bargaining team is recommending this agreement because it will allow nurses to continue to provide world-class care."

David Spahlinger, MD, president of Michigan Medicine and executive vice dean for clinical affairs of the University of Michigan medical school, also spoke favorably of the deal.

"Reaching a resolution is the best possible outcome for our hospital employees, our patients and our community. We all care deeply about our patients, and our top priority is to ensure our patients receive the highest quality of care," he said.

A ratification vote is expected to take place in the coming weeks.
