Bus crash sparks concern over safety of Ohio State University medical staff

A union is expressing concern about safety on Ohio State University buses after a campus bus recently was involved in an accident at the Columbus-based school, according to NBC4.

The accident occurred when a bus full of mostly OSU medical staff was hit by a tow truck during a trip from the Carmack Road parking area to the medical center, according to the TV station, which cites the accident report. About 20 people were hurt.

Rick Lucas, RN, first vice president of the Ohio State University Nurses Organization, told NBC4 overcrowding on the bus resulted in more injured people, and he is concerned about safety.

Mr. Lucas said the campus buses have been overcrowded since a parking lot across the street from the hospital had been closed by construction work. The parking lot was used by staff members.

“There were 2,500 spots that closed in the Polo lot, so they have to shuttle all of those people twice a day,” he said.

The university did not do an interview with the TV station, but it referenced an email Ohio State Health System CEO David McQuaid sent to staff members:

“Fortunately, none of the injuries were life-threatening. A few of our staff members were more seriously injured and continue to be monitored. They remain in our thoughts during this difficult time,” he wrote.

Police are investigating the accident.
