Registered nurses at Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, Ill., have petitioned for a union election, according to a filing with the National Labor Relations Board.
The National Nurses Organizing Committee/National Nurses United filed the petition Aug. 24 with the board’s Chicago regional office, seeking to represent 275 full-time, regular part-time and per diem registered nurses, NLRB records show. Advanced practice registered nurses, agency and registry nurses, nurse administrators and supervisors are excluded from the proposed unit.
The case remains open, and an election date has not been set. Nurses involved in the effort have pointed to staffing levels, the Evanston RoundTable reported Aug. 30.
A hospital spokesperson said in a statement to Becker’s that the hospital is focused on addressing staffing and operational challenges through investment, recruitment and direct engagement with its caregivers.
Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare, a for-profit system, acquired Saint Francis from St. Louis-based Ascension in March 2025. The hospital is managed by the affiliated Prime Healthcare Foundation, allowing it to retain nonprofit status.
