Healthcare workers brought the petition to a hearing for Cal/OSHA, the state agency that oversees workplace safety. Many testified about their experiences with on-the-job violence — there were nearly 5,000 workplace violence incidents in healthcare settings in the state from 2010 to 2012, according to Cal/OSHA.
With the new petition approved, Cal/OSHA will have the authority to require employers to take measures to keep employees safe, according to a news release.
