Approximately 2,400 mental health workers have ended a strike that began Oct. 21, 2024, after reaching a tentative labor contract with Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente.
Four things to know:
1. The agreement covers members of the National Union of Healthcare Workers in Southern California, according to a May 5 joint news release from both parties.
2. Kaiser and NUHW said union members will review the tentative agreement, with a ratification vote expected to conclude by May 8. If ratified, the agreement will take effect immediately. Details of the deal will be available upon ratification.
3. Mark Ghaly, MD, secretary of the California Health and Human Services Agency, and Darrell Steinberg, an attorney who previously served as mayor of Sacramento, Calif., facilitated negotiations.
4. The union and Kaiser began negotiating a new labor contract in July 2024.
