Advanced practice providers at Portland, Ore.-based Legacy Health are set to begin an open-ended strike Dec. 2 at Legacy Emanuel and Legacy Good Samaritan medical centers, according to a Nov. 21 news release from the Oregon Nurses Association.
The ONA represents about 140 adult specialty APPs, including nurse practitioners, physician associates, certified nurse midwives and clinical nurse specialists. The union said members are seeking competitive wages to support retention and delivered their strike notice Nov. 20 after 18 months of bargaining.
Legacy said it has met with the union in more than 30 sessions during that time and has offered an average 10% pay increase based on local and national data. “We must balance fair and competitive compensation with the financial constraints required to keep our organization viable — especially during a time when we continue to run unsustainable operating losses,” the health system said in an updated statement.
Union members voted to authorize a strike in October. Legacy said bargaining will pause during the 10-day notice period and throughout the strike. The health system said contingency plans are in place to ensure continuity of care.
Legacy Health has 14,000 employees total.
