Members of SEIU District 1199 went on strike Sept. 23 at Cleveland Clinic Lutheran Hospital in Cleveland.
About 200 workers are involved, including licensed practical nurses, nursing assistants and employees in maintenance, environmental services, dietary services, housekeeping, laundry and sterile processing, according to the union and the Plain Dealer. The union has been bargaining since February, and the previous three-year contract expired in April. Workers issued a strike notice in August.
“While we are disappointed that an agreement has not yet been reached, Lutheran Hospital remains fully committed to providing safe, high-quality care to our patients and community,” the hospital said in a statement shared with Becker’s. “Lutheran Hospital continues to provide all inpatient care, appointments and scheduled procedures without disruption.”
The hospital said it looks forward to continuing good-faith negotiations and appreciates the dedication of its caregivers.
The union is seeking better pay and workplace protections, according to the Plain Dealer. It also wants to preserve its right to bargain over future changes in employees’ health insurance costs and is seeking contract language on the use of paid time off for religious observances.
No bargaining sessions are scheduled, though the union said it is willing to continue discussions, according to the publication.
