Starting Jan. 1, Bert Fish will test job applicants for a nicotine byproduct with a mouth swab. They will also have to sign an agreement to remain tobacco-free throughout their employment. The prohibition won’t apply to volunteers, medical staff or the roughly 700 hospital employees who were hired before the rule went into effect, according to the report.

The hospital campus went smoke-free in 2009, barring cigarette smoking on its property. In January 2012, Bert Fish started charging $25 per paycheck for smokers who opted to take the hospital’s health insurance coverage.
