Baystate Franklin Changes Strike Staffing Plans

Greenfield, Mass.-based Baystate Franklin Medical Center will hire temporary nurses to fill in during a strike planned for Feb. 10, according to a report by the Daily Hampshire Gazette.

This staffing plan represents a change from what Baystate Franklin has done during past strikes: when its nurses walked out in October 2012, the hospital used nurses from other facilities in the Baystate Health system and reduced services, according to the report. A high number of flu patients at other Baystate facilities made that option untenable for this strike.

The hospital will bring in roughly 70 temporary nurses to treat patients during the upcoming strike.

Baystate Franklin’s nurses are represented by the Massachusetts Nurses Association. The union issued a strike notice last month.
