Jackson-based University of Mississippi Medical Center received bankruptcy court approval July 17 to take over Greenwood (Miss.) Leflore Hospital, effective Aug. 1.
The two parties signed a letter of intent in early March to explore the potential takeover. The Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning board of trustees then voted in late June for UMMC to take over Greenwood Leflore, which sought Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection April 15.
Gary Marchand, Greenwood Leflore Hospital’s former interim CEO and executive consultant to its board, said in a July 22 statement shared with Becker’s that the transfer of assets is scheduled for July 31, with legal documents like the deed and title transfers being prepared.
Under the transfer, the hospital will be renamed UMMC Greenwood, Alan Jones, MD, associate vice chancellor for health affairs at UMMC, said in a July 22 statement shared with Becker’s.
“UMMC Greenwood hospital will add to UMMC’s existing services in the community, which currently includes obstetrics and gynecology, internal medicine and pediatrics clinics and an AirCare helicopter base,” Dr. Jones said. “We look forward to serving the Greenwood community and surrounding areas as part of our commitment to providing the highest quality health care to the citizens of Mississippi.”
