The week in hospital M&A

Community Health Systems plans to sell an Alabama hospital for $450 million and CommonSpirit is in talks to sell more North Dakota hospitals to Altru.

Here are four hospital M&A moves that Becker’s reported during the week of Jan. 19:

1. Chicago-based CommonSpirit signed a letter of intent to transfer ownership of three additional hospitals to Grand Forks, N.D.-based Altru.

The nonbinding agreement includes CHI St. Alexius Health in Bismarck, CHI St. Alexius Health Turtle Lake and CHI St. Alexius Health Garrison (N.D.). If finalized, the move would expand Altru’s footprint further west in the state.

On March 1, Altru Health — which currently operates an acute care hospital and specialty hospital — will acquire CHI St. Alexius Health Devils Lake, a 25-bed critical access hospital, from CommonSpirit.

2. Upland, Pa.-based Crozer-Chester Medical Center will reopen under new ownership after closing last spring due to financial distress.

Chariot Equities, a real estate investment & development company, and Allaire Health Services finalized their acquisition of the 64-acre Crozer campus after the facility’s closure and bankruptcy prompted a court-supervised auction. The new owners plan to redevelop the site into a “right-sized” acute care hospital and regional ambulatory hub, restoring emergency and inpatient services to Delaware County.

The 300-bed hospital closed May 2 after Los Angeles-based Prospect Medical Holdings filed for bankruptcy in January and failed to reach a deal to keep the hospital open.

3. Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems signed a definitive agreement to sell Crestwood Medical Center in Huntsville, Ala., to Huntsville (Ala.) Hospital Health System for $450 million.

The deal includes all of the assets tied to the 180-bed hospital and is expected to close in the second quarter of 2026, pending regulatory approvals and other closing conditions.

4. Prospect Medical Holdings said it plans to move forward with a $1 million sale of its shuttered Springfield (Pa.) Hospital to KQT Aikens Partners 2 after the original bidder failed to close the transaction.

Restorative Health Foundation & Syan Investments was the initial successful bidder for the hospital in October 2025, but refused to complete the purchase despite not having contingencies in its offer.

Springfield Hospital closed in 2022.
