Upland, Pa.-based Crozer-Chester Medical Center closed May 2 as part of Prospect Medical Holdings’ court-approved plan to shutter Upland-based Crozer Health, NBC Philadelphia reported May 2.

Crozer-Chester’s emergency department closed April 30 prior to the wider 300-bed hospital closure.

Crozer Health’s other facility, Ridley Park, Pa.-based Taylor Hospital, closed April 26. The two hospital closures resulted in 2,651 employee layoffs, according to a WARN notice filed by Crozer.

The closures come after a monthslong push to keep the health system afloat. Prospect acquired Crozer in 2016, and said in a statement to Becker’s that it worked “tirelessly” to avoid a total closure.

The Pennsylvania Attorney General’s office expressed its displeasure with Crozer Health’s closure and blamed Prospect’s private equity owners, Leonard Green and Partners, for the damage inflicted, a spokesperson said in a statement shared with Becker’s.

“We will continue to work through the bankruptcy process to pursue the commonwealth’s financial claims to the greatest extent possible in order to hold Prospect accountable for actions that caused this closure,” the statement said.

Becker’s has reached out to Crozer Health for comment and will update this story should more information become available.
