R1 has launched Phare Utilization Management, a new AI-powered tool designed to shift utilization management from retrospective chart review to real-time clinical and financial decisioning.

Phare UM, built on R1’s Phare OS platform, continuously reviews every patient encounter from admission through discharge rather than focusing limited staff time on a small subset of cases, according to a Sept. 16 R1 news release shared with Becker’s. The tool uses AI agents to apply clinical judgment, flag payer-specific denial risk and surface documentation gaps within existing utilization management workflows, reducing manual chart review.

Sayre, Pa.-based Guthrie Clinic is among the first health systems to adopt the tool, according to the release.

R1 works with more than 1,000 healthcare providers, including 95 of the top 100 U.S. health systems, and processes over 600 million payer transactions annually, according to the release.
