State Regulators’ Decisions Increases Competition Between North Carolina Hospitals

Decisions by the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation has increased preexisting competition between two healthcare systems in the state, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.

Initially the department conditionally approved Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center’s application for a 48-bed, $100 million hospital in Davie County, but it has now rejected the addition of a birthing center. The department has approved Novant Health’s second application for a $96 million hospital in Clemmons.

The two potential hospital sites are only separated by four miles.

Novant has expressed its support of a two-hospital solution, but in the past Baptist has resisted the idea, according to the Winston-Salem Journal report. While the state conditionally approved both hospitals, most analysts believe it is unlikely that both will be approved. If the division of health service regulation authorizes both projects, Forsyth County will have five hospitals.
