Sitka Community Hospital, SEARHC should merge, consultant says

An outside consulting firm recommended the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium, which owns Sitka, Alaska-based Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital, purchase Sitka (Alaska) Community Hospital's assets and absorb its healthcare operations, according to an Alaska Public Media report.

ECG Management Consultants presented its 27-page findings report to the Sitka General Assembly Tuesday. The time frame for the assembly's decision on the issue was not disclosed.

The two organizations had previously discussed a variety of potential management options, including a joint venture, but scrapped plans in February.

The Sitka Community Hospital board approved a letter of intent for the financially struggling hospital to integrate operations with Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital in December.
